Supermodel Kate Moss has long made headlines for things she says as much as the things she does. Not so long back there was a famously documented cocaine scandal which went hand in hand with her non-stop party lifestyle. She became a media darling when dating Pete Docherty and for a time it was hard to move without seeing her in the tabloid headlines.
She courted scandal again when during an interview with fashion magazine WWD she coined the phrase: “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”
There was mass backlash and the public slammed the model for her lack of tact. She received heavy criticism for her off the cuff comment, with many accusing her of encouraging young women to become anorexic.
It was widely felt that she was becoming a very bad role model to young women, especially as she revelled in being pat of the ‘heroin chic’ of the 1990s and that se was leading girls in completely the wrong direction.
As a model her naturally slim frame is perfect for the job and she has often been on the receiving end of publicity, both good and bad, as a result, with many assuming she was anorexic. She spoke about her body in a slew of interviews and was keen to impress on her readers that she was naturally thin and not anorexic as some headline seekers were reporting.
The Insider, who labelled the model as being “delusional”, quoted her as saying: “I was never anorexic, so I was never that skinny. I was never bony-bony. But I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to be this skinny”.
Kate continued by blaming her stick thin frame on the model lifestyle and that she often went without food while involved in fashion shows.
“I remember standing up in the bath one day, and there was a mirror in front of me, and I was so thin! I hated it. I never liked being that skinny”.
But she feels she was being made a bad example of in some quarters and by way of damage limitation she responded,: “I was a scapegoat. The media had to put responsibility on somebody, and I was chosen. They felt free to say that because someone was thin they were anorexic, which is ridiculous”.
