Thomas Beatie shot to fame in 2008 when he became the first known transgender man to fall pregnant. Now, having given birth to two babies, Beatie is expecting his third child, reportedly due this month.
The man, formerly known as Tracy, chose to retain his female reproductive organs when undergoing sexual reassignment therapy in 2002 hoping to one day give birth.
In April 2008, Beatie appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show with his wife Nancy, who is not able to have children herself. It was there that the pregnancy was revealed. The View announced Beatie was pregnant a second time in 2009 and this year, the couple wrote into The Advocate with news of the third pregnancy.
“Hiding a pregnant man is like hiding an 800-pound gorilla,” Beatie said, according to Digital Spy, “Nancy and I wanted to tell our story from our own mouths before it got out.”
The two are previously said to have told Barbara Walters, of The View, that they ordered sperm off the internet and used an ordinary turkey baster to impregnate Beatie.
Actress Halle Berry also reportedly got pregnant through artifical insemination (AI).
