Gamestring add mobile play to WoW armory, alarm bells ring for addicts

GameString are a cloud gaming service provider, and what that means is that they host your game on their server while you control the action from a portable device such as a smartphone or one of the many new tablets.

The 3D rendering and number crunching is handled by their machine, as a small device like a phone would not have the processing power to cope with something as graphically demanding as WoW.  The user still has control although seemingly latency would be an issue, and watches the game through their device.

Gamestring yesterday released a video on youtube which showed the most popular MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW) running on an Android driven HTC Desire handset. The player was controlling via the handset but the game was being run on a computer 80km away.

While this seems like a huge leap forward for gamers there will be raised eyebrows by concerned family members, partners, husbands and wives who have already fallen victim to excessive gaming. Many gaming “widows” will be unhappy about the amount and ease of access players already have to games.

Gaming is fast becoming recognised as a proper addiction.  Indeed “addicts” display the same behavioural patterns and psychological symptoms as gamblers, alcoholics or drug addicts.

Many addicts admit that gaming has cost them jobs, relationships, incurred huge debts, caused health deterioration and in some cases, even lives have been lost.

The promising news for victims of addiction is that Gamestring’s scheme is not available for another two months and by the looks of the video, the game could be largely unplayable anyway.

Undoubtedly more games will jump on the band wagon and attempt to make gaming even more accessible, but for now, watch the video and decide for yourself.
