Many of us will have tried a diet or ten in our never-ending quest to obtain the perfect bikini body. One thing we will have find out over the course of the months and weeks during which we’ve sacrificed good food is that once the diet is over, the pounds come creeping back. A French doctor claims he has found the solution to this, and millions of French diet followers can confirm this.
Dr. Dukan claims he has found a method that will see you lose weight quickly, and with the help of different phases of his diet, will see you stabilize your weight. For the rest of your life.
The main philosophy of this diet is: protein, protein protein. Protein is good for you – it gives your body the energy it needs without excess fat or carbohydrates. Essentially, this diet was created for obese people – the fatter you are, the better you can lose weight with this diet. According to brighthub.com Dr. Pierre Dukan based his creation of the diet after years of working with obese people and helping them lose weight.
“It has become clear to me over the years that calorie counting does not work – dieters’ brains don’t work like that,” DailyMail.co.uk quotes him as saying. “Calorie counting sets quotas, doses and portions, but it forgets that the people having to follow it are flesh and blood, made up of emotions and instincts. Yes, the most motivated ones may manage to lose weight, but all or almost all of them will eventually put it back on.”
He says many feel their work is done once the patient has lost the weight they want. But what then?
“Doctors assume their work is done once you’ve slimmed down, but there is something uncomfortable and unethical about having to face patients again six months later when their weight has returned. I couldn’t stand the idea of putting people on a diet for life. That would be impossible – there is far too much pleasure to be had in eating!”
His theory is that after the weight has been lost, there is one simple concept to keeping the weight off, namely Protein Thursdays. You are allowed to eat whatever you want every single day of the week, except for one (which he suggests is Thursday), where you will consume only protein. If you do this for the rest of your life, he guarantees you will keep the weight off.
The diet is based around three steps.
Step One: The Attack Phase
This phase of the diet requires you to eat protein, and only protein, for a certain amount of time. The amount of time you choose this part of the diet to last (anywhere between one and 10 days), depends on how much weight you want to lose. DailyMail.co.uk reports that in this phase of the diet you can lose up to 7lbs in five days.
So what are you allowed to eat? Fish, lean meat, eggs, crustaceans, shellfish and non-fat dairy. When selecting the protein you eat, you must remember that the preparation of the food is essential. Braising, steaming or boiling your food is good. You do not want to fry it in oil or any kind of fat (including butter).
Another important thing to remember during this phase of the diet is that you must drink 1.5 liters of water every single day.
This phase will allow excess water to be extracted from your body, and the high-protein diet will dull your appetite.
Step Two: The Cruise Phase
Now you have lost a majority of the weight you wanted to lose. During this phase you will alternate between two diets. One day you will have the “attack phase diet” in which you eat only protein, and the next you will add some vegetables to your protein. Go back and forth between these two diets.
On those days where you add vegetables to your protein, it is essential to consume healthy and well-prepared vegetables. Raw, boiled, braised or steamed vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, mushroom and salad leaves are the best option here. Stay away from starchy vegetables like potatoes.
Remember to keep drinking 1.5 liters of water (at least) every day, and to keep your body moving. Dr. Dukan recommends brisk 30-minute walks daily. After all, you can’t lose weight with complete inactivity. You can lose up to 2lbs a week during this phase of the diet.
Step Three: The Consolidation Phase
This is where you learn to keep the weight off. Once you have lost the amount of weight you want to lose (or achieved your Dukan True Weight), you will begin the final phase of the Dukan Diet. You are no longer trying to lose weight in this phase, so you can reintroduce – albeit slowly – things like fruits and starchy vegetables. You will definitely not lose weight anymore, but you will also not gain weight. This phase prevents your weight from jumping back up. Once you feel your weight has stabilized after reintroducing previously forbidden foods, you have completed the diet.
Now you can stay slender for the rest of your life by maintaining the protein day once a week!
