Hundreds 'step out' to stop diabetes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Despite rainy skies in Louisville Saturday morning, hundreds showed up for the annual Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes.

An estimated 500 people turned out for the walk which was less than expected but organizers say the rain actually helped them break fundraising records. $200,000 was raised for the American Diabetes Association.

The money is being used to fund research for a cure as well as free community outreach programs.

The event also had free vision and blood sugar testing. One woman who attended the event said she was pre-diabetic and her goal was to get checked out.

“I’m glad to know it’s only 118. I’ve had it tested once before and it was very high and it’s giving me a bench mark or something to go by to start watching,” Carolyn Miller said. “I’m trying to manage it by not drinking too many sodas, drinking lots of water and my diet.”

WHAS11 has sponsored the event for the past 6 years and evening anchor Doug Proffitt emceed the event.
