Whitney Houston combats drug addiction with stint in rehab


Opportunity and success came her way quite early. At the tender age of 14, she performed as the lead singer with Michael Zagers Bandand from here there was no looking back. Houston’s top movie performances include ‘The Bodyguard’. The film’s theme song ‘I Will Always Love You’, which is sung by Whitney, is one of the biggest selling singles in music history.

In 1985, Houston’s remarkable debut album brought her the recognition she deserved and from here her success journey took off to even greater heights. Her debut album launched her onto the international music scene, it being the best selling debut album by any female singer. Whitney had everything going for, and could even be selected in regards to what movie roles she would accept and who she wanted to work with on her music albums. All was not to stay on the right track, however. Whitney would suffer many pitfalls, mostly due to her ensuing drug addiction. Many say her husband Bobby Brown, whom she married in 1992, is to blame for the sudden collapse of her career.

Despite having a clean image throughout her career, her behavior began to change in the late 1990s. She became more erratic, often appearing late or suddenly canceling performances. The year 2000, especially, came as the year of struggles and personal tragedies. Whitney Houston was found with drugs at a Hawaii airport and since then has struggled with substance abuse. Rumors were circulating the Whitney did in fact have a drug problem, and her out of character performance during an interview with Diane Sawyer sealed many people’s opinion. When Whitney was asked about her drug consumption, she famously replied: “First of all, let’s get one thing straight. Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack. Let’s get that straight, okay? We don’t do crack. We don’t do that. Crack is wack.” Since the interview the singer has been dubbed Whitney “Crack is wack” Houston by the media.

Her troubled relations with her husband Bobby Brown and property dispute aggravated the situation and she fell victim to the drug addiction and checked in to The Meadows rehabilitation centre. The rehab center has been home to many celebrities and their respective treatments including Kate Moss and and American boxer Mike Tyson.

She was successfully treated and 2006 onwards she was worked on clearing her tainted image. Whitney completely transformed her life by the support of experts at The Meadows. Her commitment and dedication to come out clean is truly inspirational. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Whitney admitted it was her mother’s tough love that saw her seek treatment and enter rehab.

Other celebrities who have battled addictions include Johnny CashDrew BarrymoreLiza Minnelli,Lindsay Lohan and Mickey Rourke, to name only a few.
