Robert Downey Jr. overcomes drug addictions

A renowned American actor and producer, Robert Downey Jr. started his career at the age of five and since then his career moved on smoothly. In 1985, he got a major breakthrough in ‘Tuff Tuff’ and ‘Weird Science’. Robert got recognition as the lead actor in ‘The Pick-up Artist’ in 1987. This par excellence performer has many awards to his credit including two Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actor and the Best Ensemble Cast. But during his career span, he was known as the troubled actor because of certain addictions.

From 1996 to 2001, Downey was continuously charged with several drug and substance abuses. After seeking treatment several times and failing, Robert Downey Jr., who had been arrested on several occasions for drug-related issues, told a judge: “It’s like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger’s on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal.” Downey made this statement in court in 1999.

After being reprimanded for missing several drug test appointments, which were allocated as part of his parole after his arrests, Downey was sentenced to three years in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison. After being surprisingly released after only one year, Downey tried to get his mind off the drugs and his career back on track by joining the hit TV series ‘Ally McBeal’ in 2000. However, still during his first season on the show, Downey was again arrested on drug-related charges. Producers wrote him out of the show. Downey also lost a large movie role.

Five years after entering his drug addiction, Robert Downey Jr. told Oprah he was finally ready to make an improvement in his life. During a filming of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, “I finally said, ‘You know what? I don’t think I can continue doing this.’ And I reached out for help, and I ran with it. […] You can reach out for help in kind of a half-assed way, and you’ll get it, and you won’t take advantage of it. It’s not that difficult to overcome these seemingly ghastly problems…what’s hard is to decide to actually do it.”

Robert Downey Jr. checked into the Promises Malibu centre and underwent treatment several times. He saw a troubled life of many years with the drug addiction and substance abuse. He had a trail of failures after his habit of consuming drugs and other harmful substances. Initially he was unable to recover from this habit but Promises Malibu Centre worked wonders for him. After recovering successfully from the Promises centre, Robert made an impressive comeback with his debut musical album ‘The Futurist’ and ‘Gothika’. Since then he has enjoyed the successes of lead roles in ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Tropic Thunder’, to name only a few.
