78-year-old actor Rip Torn was arrested on Friday after breaking into a bank. The actor was drunk and was carrying a loaded weapon, for which he reportedly did not have a license. The incident took place at a closed bank in Connecticut.
The actor, NYdailynews.com reports, was allegedly so drunk, he asked his arresting officers why they were removing him from his house.
After spending the weekend in jail, Rip, whose real name is Elmore Rual Torn, stepped before a judge on Monday. He faced charges of trespassing, possession of a firearm without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, criminal mischief and burglary. His lawyer maintains the actor never planned to rob the bank.
“There’s an alcohol issue that needs to be addressed,” NYdailynews.com reports lawyer A. Waterfall as saying. “Obviously, he wasn’t there intending to commit a crime, in my estimation.”
“Clearly, there is no allegation he was brandishing a weapon in any manner, nor did he threaten anyone in any way,” ABCnews.go.com reports the lawyer as saying.
The actor was released on $100,000 bond, and will be entering a rehab facility today, his lawyer said.
Rip’s acting credits include ‘Men In Black’, ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’ and, most recently, a role on the hit TV series ’30 Rock’.
