British rocker Pete Doherty claims his heart stopped beating when he was rushed to hospital last month, and says he was on life support.
“My heart stopped beating,” he said in an interview with music magazine NME. Although the official reason he gave for being hospitalized was “exhaustion”, he claims it was something far more serious that caused him to cancel three shows in Ireland.
“If I hadn’t been on a life support machine I’d have been in Ireland,” the Babyshambles front man said.
Although he admits doctors reportedly first thought he was being hospitalized for drug-related issues, he was permitted to leave the hospital after one night of observation.
“Their [doctors’] immediate thought was that it was to do with drugs, but it wasn’t,” Doherty, who has an implant to counteract the effects of heroin and cocaine said.
“What happened? Well, I don’t know. I don’t remember.
“I was running into the walls, making steering wheel signs with my hands.
“And then I just …. stopped.
“My body just stopped:”
According to The Sun, Doherty said: “The doctors are concerned about my heart rate.
“I’ve always had a slight dickie heart, I was born with it. I’m fragile in there, you know?”
