Former Alice In Chains rocker Mike Starr, who had been fighting substance absue problems, left a message on a phone, begging an unknown friend for drugs just hours before he died of an unexpected overdose.
The cause of death has not yet been identified, but a roommate of the bassist told Tmz.com that Starr had been using the the heroin substance methadone on Monday night and mixing it with methadone.
The tablid website also obtained a tape, in which the musician can be heard desperately asking a friend for cannabis: “Also, if you could score me an eighth, quarter ounce, a bud, whatever, you know, a killer price.
“Just come up this way. I need it so bad.”
The 44 year old, who in 2009 appeared on Celebrity Rehab for his addiction to heroin, was found dead in his home in Salt Lake City the day after he made the call.
Starr’s former band mates Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney released a statement which read: “Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their privacy – and the privacy of Mike’s family – during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with Mike’s family.”
