Melanie Griffith checks into rehab

According to several media reports, Melanie chose to go to the Californian rehab facility voluntarily to control her alcohol and painkiller addiction in what is reportedly part of a “routine plan that was designed between her and her doctors years ago,” her representative says. Lindsay Lohan and Kirsten Dunst are among other patients who have sought treatment at Cirque Lodge.

Melanie has always claimed it was her family, husband Antonio Banderas and their 12-year-old daughter Stella, as well as her 24-year-old son Alexander and 19-year-old daughter Dakota from previous marriages, that has supported her through trying times. “Overcoming addictions is tough but it can be made easier if you have someone that can offer support. My husband and family supported me so much through this journey and continue to do so.”

Gossip blogger Perez Hilton quotes a source on his website saying: “The reason Melanie checked in was her husband was demanding that she get clean and sober. He told her that if she didn’t get the help she needed it would be the end of their marriage.”

Some are going as far as reporting that Melanie Griffith has obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms which are making her seek treatment. Some news websites suggest Melanie’s need for everything around her to be yellow is what triggered her to seek help.

While Melanie’s obsessive-compulsive symptoms are in no way confirmed, her previous addiction to prescription medication, alcohol and cocaine is well-documented, with the star having sought treatment twice previously.

The first time Griffith checked into rehab was for cocaine and alcohol abuse after her divorce from her second husband, Steven Bauer, in 1987. Of this time, she says: “What I did was drink myself to sleep at night,” she said. “If I wasn’t with someone, I was an unhappy girl.”

In 2000 Melanie Griffith again went to rehab after becoming addicted to strong pain killers she took as a result of a neck injury. Now, nine years later, she is seeking treatment again.

Melanie shot to fame on the Hollywood scene after her 1988 role in ‘Working Girl’, which saw her nominated for an Oscar. Her other larger, more famous roles include ‘Milk Money’, ‘Crazy In Alabama’, ‘The Night We Called It A Day’, and ‘RKO 281’.

Melanie has been married four times, twice to the same man. She began dating Hollywood heavyweight Don Johnson – eight years her senior – when she was just 14 years old. The pair divorced six months after their wedding, which took place shortly after Melanie’s 18th birthday in 1976. Five years later Melanie married Steven Bauer, a fellow actor. The pair, who have a son together, divorced in 1987, after which, as stated above, Melanie checked into rehab for the first time.

In 1989, after having finished rehab upon his insistence and after becoming pregnant, Melanie married ex-husband Don Johnson a second time.  The pair separated six years later after Melanie walked out on him due to his own substance abuse issues.

In 1996 Melanie married Spanish heartthrob Antonio Banderas, three years her junior. The couple have a daughter, Stella, and have publicly discussed their marital issues. Melanie, obsessed with the fact that her age is beginning to show, was consistently worried Antonio would fall for one of his younger co-stars. Jealousy appeared to exist continuously in their relationship – from her side. In a bid to retain her youthful good looks, Melanie has undergone plastic surgery. While she has never officially confirmed to having cosmetic surgery, the changes to her lips and eyes are undeniable. Many speculate she has a lip implant, has had botox and a facelift. Rumors say that she had so much plastic surgery, her husband Antonio – whose name she wears as a tattoo on her arm – has forbidden her from having any more.
