Mark Wahlberg and Will Smith to duke it out for $1m each?

A renowned boxing promoter thinks it would be a good idea to pit Mark Wahlberg against Will Smith in the boxing ring. According to Damon Feldman the event would make a great celebrity spectacle.

Feldman, who is the Hollywood Boxing Federation chief, is willing to lay down the lure of $1m to each actor.

Both actors have now appeared in boxing movies. Wahlberg’s latest fare, The Fighter was released for public viewing last Friday, while Will Smith famously starred as the iconic Muhammed Ali in the 2001 blockbuster, Ali.

If the event went ahead it wouldn’t be the first celebrity boxing match to take place through the Hollywood Boxing Federation, but these two would be the first that have been trained to fight professionally.

Wahlberg underwent a rigorous, self enforced training regime to get into shape for The Fighter; flying his two trainers, boxing gloves and speed bags with him wherever he went. This included the sets of other films he was working on at the time, where he would get up as early as 4 am to slug it out with his punch bag. During his down time on the set of The Fighter he would spar for up to 4 hours with other boxers.

“I spent more money paying my trainers and having them travel with me than I got paid, by a good half a million dollars,” said Wahlberg.

Feldman has proposed a slightly different deal for the pair. Celebrity boxers normally take each other on in 3 minute rounds (the regulation standard for amateur boxers), but his intention for Wahlberg and Smith is to fight in 3 three rounds lasting just 1 minute each.

Feldman is reported as saying, “We don’t think these two are going to rip each others heads off, we’re just hoping to get into the ring and have a little fun duking it out.”

And he added, “It would be a great event too, can you imagine?”

The pair have as yet said nothing on the matter, but were they to accept it would be a massive coup for the Hollywood Boxing Federation whose previous combatants include less well known names like Jose Canseco, Tonya Harding and Rodney King.

Would you like to see Mark Wahlberg fight Will Smith, and if so, who do you think would win? Or does it smack a little too much of Celebrity Deathmatch? Let us know by leaving a comment.
