Son of infamous financier Bernard Madoff, Mark, has been found hanged in his New York apartment. According to friends, the 46-year-old had been left “unalterably bitter” by his father’s crimes.
Madoff jr. was discovered hanging from a dog collar attached to a pipe at his home, the Mirror reports. His two-year-old son was sleeping nearby.
Bernard Madoff was a prominent Wall Street player, managing top wealth management firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, which he founded in 1960. In March 2009, he pleaded guilty to turning his business into a huge Ponzi scheme – a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to separate investors from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors, rather than from any actual profit earned.
Madoff’s is believed to be the largest Ponzi scheme in history, with the total missing from clients’ accounts amounting to almost $65 billion. The 72-year-old received a sentence of 150 years, the maximum allowed, after his sons told the authorities that their father had confessed his crimes to them.
Mark Madoff’s body was discovered by his father-in-law at around 7.30 am, who had gone to the apartment following a distressed call from his daughter, The Telegraph cites police sources. Stephanie Madoff had asked her dad to check up on Mark after a worrying exchange of emails and calls.
The stockbroker’s lawyer, Martin Flumenbaum, ruled out any foul play: “Mark Madoff took his own life today,” he said.
“This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy. He is an innocent victim of his father’s monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo.”
According to the NY Daily News, Madoff gave his parking attendant Anthony Diaz $400 in a Christmas card the day before he committed suicide.
“He say, ‘Thank you guys for taking care of my car,'” Diaz recalled.
Usually, Madoff did not turn up with a Christmas bonus until four or five days before the holiday, the attendant said. “I think he go on vacation, that’s why.”
