Los Angeles Lakers player Sasha Vujacic added a romantic touch to the Lakers NBA preseason game against Golden State on Thursday by announcing his engagement to Maria Sharapova.
“We are engaged and both really happy,” the Slovenian sport star said. “It’s good and now we can focus on other things.”
Vujacic revealed that he proposed at a friend’s barbecue on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting. He went on to say: “It’s probably old school. I had to do it like a gentleman.”
Max Eisenbud, the agent for the former World No.1 Russian player, confirmed the news.
Sharapova made her professional breakthrough aged 17 when she won her first major title at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old went on to win the 2006 US Open and the 2008 Australian Open.
Surgery to treat a chronic shoulder injury forced the tennis beauty out of the game in 2008 for close to a year and her ranking slipped to 126. She has since made a spectacular comeback and is currently ranked 18th.
