Gabourey Sidibe has had issues with her weight ever since she can remember. Talking on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Precious star said she went on her first diet when she was just 6 years old. Even more amazing then, that a woman who has battled with body image almost her entire life could exude so much confidence.
Oprah, who has struggled with weight problems herself in the past, asked the 26-year-old what her secret was. She said that director of Precious, Lee Daniels, has expressed this same bafflement, commenting that Gabourey spoke “like a white girl from the Valley“ who is “either in denial about her physicality or from another planet“ because she seems so secure in who she is.
Gabby admitted that her journey had not been easy: “It’s something I’ve had to work at…I’ve never been a small girl. One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body.“
The star added that it wasn’t until she was 21 or 22, that she finally had enough of hating herself and “feeling bad all the time“.
Having sparked media interest with her on-screen performance, the Oscar nominee is now at the center of fierce debate concerning her physical appearance. Many have suggested that Gabourey’s weight will prevent her from getting major Holywood roles, while others have argued that there is no reason why the actress should be forced to become a standard size 0 Holywood celeb.
According to TMZ, Ms Sidibe is even being offered major deals by weight loss companies, wanting the star to lose weight and promote their products. The news provider claimed that AcaiSupply.com have offered Gabby 1 years worth of free supply in return for endorsement and under the condition that she lose weight. The company’s CEO allegedly expressed his concern over the star’s health and obesity in general, which is a “major epidemic“ in the US and a “terrible affliction“.
The CEO reportedly wrote: “The only way you can reach your goal of someday winning that Oscar is by being active, fit, and most of all, healthy!“
Also involved in the great Holywood weight debate is actress Kate Winslet and supermodel Kate Moss. The former has stated her view that Holywood is breeding anorexics, while the latter thinks there is no better feeling, than the feeling of being skinny. So, the debate rages on.
