Angelina Jolie was said to be on the verge of postpartum depression after the birth of her twins, Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon, in September 2008. The Lara Croft star was said to be severely under the weather due to stress and exhaustion and had hidden herself away at the Chateux Miraval in the Provence with husband Brad Pitt, according to numerous US sources. The now 34-year-old reportedly became worried about the health of her newborns and contacted a doctor.
The National Enquirer reported that the celebrity couple’s twins were in fact suffering from colic – a condition common in babies brought about by intestinal gas or obstruction in the intestines, causing pain and therefore repeated crying episodes. In Touch Weekly added that it was this state of unrest that was sending Angelina Jolie into “depression mode“.
An insider told the magazine that the star tried desperately to control her emotions around her four other children – Maddox, now 8, Pax, 5, Zahara, 4, and Shiloh, 3.
The source remarked: “(Angelina) has been staying in bed most of the time, all she does is sleep. She has little energy and has to force herself to remember to eat because she is still breastfeeding. She cries at the drop of a hat and laughs at inappropriate times. Everyone is hoping she will talk to someone about how she is feeling.“
Feelings of sadness, anxiety and lethargy are all common symptoms of postpartum depression, as well as mood swings, tearfulness and problems eating and sleeping. Because the severity of the condition varies so greatly, it is difficult to establish its prevelance, although it is thought that as many as 80% of women experience it in some form or another following pregnancy. In extreme cases, it can lead to the destruction of marriages and the non-formation of a bond between mother and baby.
Although there have been plenty of reports about the fragile state of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s marriage, the couple are still very much together, and the actress hailed for her good will and beauty seems to have recovered from her episode.
In 2008 the star visited a refugee settlement in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province and donated $75,000 towards the contruction of a school which, as of this week, is ready to welcome 800 students, according to US Magazine. She is also currently filming her new movie, Tourist, alongside Alice in Wonderland star Johnny Depp.
