Fiona Apple, an American singer and songwriter, has had her share of troubles suffering with eating disorders. Her lonely descent into depriving her body of food started after she was raped outside her home, when she was just twelve years old. Not surprisingly this had an extremely adverse impact on the young girl, and as a result she suffered from major depression and started to follow an erratic diet. She became extremely paranoid after the ordeal and also embarked on a desperate bid to lose weight.

The media started to say that Fiona Apple was anoerexic, but she says that the drastic change in her appearance was not out of a desire to be thin, but as a reaction to being raped. Self-injury.net mentions that in an attempt to clarify the media’s misunderstanding of her eating disorder, Fiona explained in a ‘Rolling Stone’ interview: “I definitely had an eating disorder. What was really frustrating for me was that everyone thought I was anorexic, and I wasn’t.”

“I was really depressed and self-loathing. For me, it wasn’t about being thin, it was about getting rid of the bait attached to my body. A lot of it came from the self-loathing that came from being raped at the point of developing my voluptuousness.”

“I just thought that if you had a body and if you had anything on you that would be grabbed, it would be grabbed. So I did purposely get rid of it.”

After the release of her album called ‘Tidal’ in 1998, Fiona Apple started to gain weight. The star wanted to prove that the size of her frame did not matter to her. And as quoted on the website, she explained herself by saying, “I mean, my plan is to gain enough weight that I can really be considered voluptuous, and do my ‘First Taste’ video. And I am preparing myself for what is going to happen. Because soon they will be saying that I’m fat. And it will hurt me.”

Many musicians have made references to eating disorders, and Fiona, 33, is no exception with a song called ‘Paper Bag’ from her second album.

Fiona Apple shot to fame with her album ‘Tidal’, with the hit single Criminal breaking many records and also earning her a Grammy Award.

The talented singer and songwriter has made major headway since the troubled days of her youth. She has a more positive outlook on life again, looks healthy and has regained her confidence in herself and her music.

Other figures in the public eye who have battled eating disorders include Melanie Chisholm of Spice Girls fame, Jessica Alba and Mary-Kate Olsen

“She became extremely paranoid after the ordeal and also embarked on a desperate bid to lose weight.”

    Um no she didnt

Also Paper bag has nothing to do with eating disorders either

    • “hunger hurts but starving works” was referring to it hurts to hunger for the boy’s love(in the song paper bag) but starving for the love is worth the cost of the pain it would cause. She’s referring to the fact that it hurts to yearn for his love but keeping herself from his love protects herself from the pain, hence the phrase “starving works.” It’s not about an eating disorder, but more of starving for love because the pain of it would be too much to handle. It can be related to an eating disorder in the sense that while starving does hurt, not eating will ensure the sufferer that they won’t feel the guilt. But other than that the song is more than likely about love.
